BLACK AND WHITE TEGU
SALVATOR MERIANAE
Sometimes called the Giant Tegu, the Black and White Tegu is the largest species of tegu. Males can reach up to 4 ½ feet in length and females can reach up to 3 feet. Wild tegus have a lifespan of 15-20 years and even longer in captivity.
These lizards are not usually found up in trees. They dig burrows in the ground to help provide the proper humidity and protection from the elements.
Like many other cold-blooded species, Black and White Tegus will go into a brumation, which is a hibernation-like state, when the weather gets cooler. As the temperature warms, the Black and White Tegu becomes very active and will travel far from their den to find food.
