CAIMAN LIZARD
DRACAENA GUIANENSI
Even though the Northern Caiman Lizard is not a crocodilian, its flattened tail, thick body, and the rows of keeled scales along its backs resemble one, giving them their common name.
These lizards are semi aquatic, but also excellent climbers. They will rest on branches above water for an easy dive down to escape if threatened.
Northern Caiman Lizards eat a variety of freshwater prey, but their diet consists mainly of snails. These lizards have powerful jaws and sharp back teeth that allow them to crush snails, clams and other shelled prey.
Did you know?
The Northern Caiman Lizard has a clear third eyelid that acts as built-in goggles to protect their eyes and help them see in murky water. This third eyelid is called a nictitating membrane and many reptiles, birds and sharks have them for a variety of purposes.
