NIGERIAN DWARF GOAT
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are miniature dairy goats known for their small size, social personalities and colorful coats. They are raised for milk as well as companionship and have the balanced proportions of much larger dairy goat breeds.
ABOUT NIGERIAN DWARF GOATS
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are a miniature dairy goat breed that originated from small West African goats and was developed in the United States. Although much smaller than standard dairy breeds, they have balanced body proportions that give them the appearance of a full-sized dairy goat in miniature.
The American Dairy Goat Association allows Nigerian Dwarf Goats in virtually any color or combination of colors. Their hair is short and fine, their medium-length ears stand upright and alert, and the facial profile may be straight or slightly dished.
Adult does stand between about 17 and 22.5 inches tall, while bucks may stand between about 17 and 23.5 inches. ADGA notes that there is no required breed weight, although approximately 75 pounds is considered an average adult weight.
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are true dairy animals. Despite their miniature size, females can produce a proportionate amount of milk that is especially valued for its relatively high butterfat content. Layton Aquarium also notes that the breed is commonly kept as a companion animal.
Care & Responsible Ownership
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are domesticated livestock rather than a wild species. Like other dairy goats, they need appropriate shelter, fresh water, minerals and a year-round source of roughage such as pasture, browse or quality hay. Goats are also social animals and require regular care, space to move and appropriate companionship.
