THREE-BANDED ARMADILLO

TOLYPEUTES SPP

Armadillos are the only mammals that are covered by a shell, which is made up of bony plates and covered in a very thick hard skin. Three-banded Armadillos are the only armadillos that can curl up into a perfect ball.

Armadillos eat ants, termites, bee larvae and other insects, which they dig up with their claws and slurp up with their sticky tongue. Having poor eyesight, they rely heavily on their sense of smell and hearing to detect both prey and predators.

Three-banded Armadillos produces one single pup in a litter. The pup is born extremely well developed and it can walk and roll into a ball immediately but it still stays with its mother for around 72 days before it is fully weaned.

Did you know?

The word armadillo means “little armored one” in Spanish. Three-banded Armadillos are a little smaller than a soccer ball when curled up.
